On November 14, 1861, Joseph and Daniel Bolton enlisted in the Confederate Army at Iuka, Mississippi. They enlisted for twelve months as privates in the 4th Battalion of the Mississippi Cavalry under the command of Captain Phillip D. Roddey. Their muster-in-roll shows they both had horses when they enlisted. Nothing is know about their activities as members of the cavalry. Eight months later, on July 28, 1862, Joseph received a disability discharge because he had been unfit for duty for the last 60 days. The disability certificate showed that he was 5 feet 10 inches tall, had dark hair, and hazel eyes. Joseph returned home. As far as we know, Daniel remained in Mississippi. On September 14, 1862, Company E of the 4th Alabama Cavalry was organized at Spencer Bells Blacksmith Shop just west of Rockwood. Joseph and Daniel both joined this brigade. The information above is from the program of the Confederate Memorial Service for these two men. Confederate Memorial Page > 1
