Maxine (Glasgow) Tidwell Martin
Ouida Maxine "Mack" GLASGOW, daughter of Kemper Talmage and Lela Ross (Tompkins) Glasgow, was born 1 May 1916, in Hodges, Franklin County, Alabama, died 9 Aug 2008, in Mitchell Hollingsworth Nursing Home, Florence, Lauderdale County, Alabama at age 92, and was buried 10 Aug 2008, in Mountain Home Cemetery, Glasgow Corner, Franklin County, Alabama.
Maxine Glasgow Tidwell Martin received her B. S. degree in Elementary Education at the University of North Alabama, Florence, Alabama in 1951. She received her M. A. degree as a Reading Specialist at the University of Alabama in 1968. From 1937-1940, she was a classroom teacher in the Franklin County, Alabama school system. She was also a classroom teacher in the Marion County Alabama school system from 1940-1965 and a Reading Specialist for Phillips High School, Bear Creek, Alabama from 1965-1973. She was Supervisor of the Chapter I Summer Program at Phillips High School 1965-1972. After her marriage to Richard Martin, she lived in Illinois and was the Special Reading Supervisor and teacher at School District No. 20, Illinois from 1974-1977, and Reading Director for School District No. 20, Illinois from 1977-1984.
Maxine holds memberships with the Kenneville Education Association, the National Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, Illinois Reading Conference, and the International Reading Association.
Many honors have been awarded Maxine G. Martin. She was honored as Teacher of the Year at Phillips High School in Bear Creek, Alabama in 1972. She received a Commendation by the Board of Education District No. 20, Illinois for originating and implementing a Tutorial Program in 1976. The Library Award was presented to her by the International Reading Association in 1976 for having done 'more for Literacy from the Indiana State Line to the Wisconsin State line including the city of Chicago, Illinois.' In 1989, the PTA and the Board of Education named The Waterbury School Learning Center and Library "The Maxine G. Martin Library" in her honor. The PTA of Greenbrook School organized a book club honoring Maxine G. Martin with a picture in every book donated to the school library. Greenbrook School voted to give the "Maxine G. Martin Award" at each graduation to a student who exemplifies the characteristics of Maxine Glasgow Tidwell Martin.

Mack married Lucien R. TIDWELL, son of William Sherman TIDWELL and Lela Woodson Howard MULLINS. Lucien was born 5 Aug 1908, in Marion County, Alabama, died 18 Apr 1968, in Wilson Hospital, Haleyville, Winston County, Alabama at age 59, and was buried in Mountain Home Cemetery, Lumbull Community, Bear Creek, Marion County, Alabama. Lucien Tidwell operated the Shell Service station in Bear Creek, Alabama for many years. He also bought and sold pulp wood.
Note from Ann Glasgow: Maxine would buy toys throughout the year and at Christmas time she and her husband Lucien Tidwell, would deliver the toys to the unfortunate children of the neighborhood in and around Bear Creek, Alabama. For several years, as a young girl, I was fortunate enough to participate in this event with my Aunt Maxine (Glasgow) Tidwell and her husband Lucien Tidwell.
Mack next married Richard MARTIN 5 Aug 1973. The marriage ended in divorce. Richard was born 29 Mar 1930, in Kankekee, Illinois and died in 2008 and was buried at Mountain Home Cemetery, Lumbull Community, Bear Creek, Marion County, Alabama. Richard Martin was a English teacher in Illinois.
