Vivian Lorene (EZZELL) HESTER (1909 - 1996) (107552 bytes) My mother taught me to sew. I remember her showing me how to lay out the pattern, pin it, and cut it. But before all this, she took me to a fabric store to select the pattern and then pick out the appropriate fabric. She taught me all about fabrics.

We looked all over the store checking prices and fabric content. Some were priced too high and some were not worthy of the project we had in mind. We ran our fingers over each piece to feel the softness or hardness of the weave, considering the care of any garment that might be made from any certain piece.

We looked at the colors and designs to decide which would be best for our project.

I have been reminded that our lives are a woven fabric. Different circumstances and situations color our fabric and give it a design. Other people are the threads in our life's fabric. We can be woven together tightly and close or loose and far apart.

It is my belief that all this is directed by God, the Master Weaver, to make us into a fabric of His design, color, durability, and strength.

Describing this fabric of our family I want to tell how it was woven in the setting of North Alabama and beginning with the 1930's. I begin with the person, or thread, that I knew best, my Mother, Vivian Lorene Ezzell Hester.
