Reuben Hooper moved to Belgreen in 1867 and from there he moved to the Bethel community where he bought 500 acres of land for $500.00. At that time Bethel was part of Franklin County.  It is now just north of the Franklin County line in Colbert County.  On October 14, 1885, Reuben Hooper and his wife Mary gave one acre of this land to the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, now New Bethel Baptist Church, stating their desire for said premises to be used as a place of divine worship for the use of the ministry and membership of the ME Church, South, subject to the disciplines and ministerial appointments of said church, and further stating, "The love we bear for the cause of Christ."  This property belonged to the Methodist Church until 1964.

The following words are inscribed on Reuben Hooper's tombstone:   "Dear Loving Weeping Children, Shed Not A tear For Me, For With The White Robed Angels, I Shall Forever Be."
